BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE has more new stars on the verge of superstellar careers than virtually any other Hong Kong drama. Maggie Cheung Man-yuk, who the year before was named 1st Runner Up in the Miss Hong Kong Beauty Pageant, is Monica, a 20-year-old involved with her married boss. At the Hong Kong subway station, where a safety announcement warns passengers to stand "behind the yellow line," she meets young civil servant Leslie Cheung, leading to a romance that shows the stars at their youthful best. Anita Mui Yim-fong, in one of her first major roles, won the Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a rich girl who tries to win Leslie's affections by every means at her disposal. The scriptwriters include Gordon Chan, destined to become Hong Kong's number one writer-director (with credits including Stephen Chow's FIGHT BACK TO SCHOOL and Jackie Chan's HIGHBINDERS). BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE's Chinese title means "destiny," and provides an entertaining forecast of the great things in store for its fresh team in front of and behind the camera.

Ask any martial arts movie aficionado for his or her list of all-time action greats, and there's a good chance that Killer Clans ranks somewhere near the top. Based on a popular swordplay novel, Killer Clans (whose Chinese title literally translates into the poetic "Meteor, Butterfly, Sword") has enough conspiracies, stratagems, and sword fights to make even non-action fans happy. They are masterfully staged by Yuen Cheung-yan, brother of Matrix martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping. The cast includes some of Shaw Brothers' leading swordsmen and swordswomen, and they bring to life the novel's epic battles between underground clans, where the line between good and evil is not always so clear-cut or obvious.

Hsu Hsia, a great kung fu actor himself, both directs and leads a team of four martial arts choreographers for his tale of kung fu pickpockets (including handsome Chien Hsiao-Hou), who dodge the top cop ("Venom" muscleman Lo Meng) but run afoul of a killer club owner (king of Shaw Brothers villains Wang Lung-Wei). There are assignations to assassinations, and many battles which require both light-fingered larceny as well as two-fisted (and feet) fighting. The result is a fondly remembered and exceptional genre favorite.
