Film lovers and critics went out of their way to praise this Liu Chia-liang version of the Shaolin destruction and revenge epic. Many called it the preeminent kung-fu director's best and certainly his greatest on the theme of history, martial arts, and family. Little wonder, since, beyond the Shaolin story, it also shows how Liu's own family style of kung-fu, Hung Fist, was created. There are unforgettable sequences throughout, highlighted by Hung Hsi-kuan (the mighty Chen Kuan-tai) and Fang Yung-chun's (the wonderful Lily Li) wedding night... where the lovers inexorably test their Tiger and Crane kung-fu styles in a symbolic treatment of a couple's power struggles. Almost equally unforgettable are the training sequences and a full three titanic confrontations with the White-Browed Hermit (the impressive Lo Lieh), betrayer of the Temple. The critics were right: Liu has out-done himself...as usual!

Chang Tsang-chai was an award-winning director in Taiwan before, and after, he joined the Shaw Brothers Studio to make a mere seven films. But each of these movies was respected for the same skill he brought to all his productions. This was considered one of his best, a fascinating thriller of people gambling with their money, their love, and their lives. It all takes place in a possibly mythical "Lucky Casino" somewhere in North China after the Chinese Revolution. There, two lovers meet after being separated for years, and vow to rid the establishment of corrupt military leaders, cheaters, extortionists, and criminals. They finally succeed, but at a terrible price. Lily Ho, of Princess Iron Fan fame, and Yueh Hua, star of Raw Courage, are the star-crossed, tragic lovers, who bet on righteousness, and came up blood red.

Chang Cheh is known for his revolutionary teen angst kung-fu films, his superheroic, grand guignol "Venoms" series, his sweeping martial art epics, and the likes of this: "Martial Arts World" phantasmagoricals featuring demi-dieties of mythical kung-fu. The great international idol Alexander Fu Sheng stars as a wushu warrior who must learn the "18 Palms", the "Nine Secrets", and be taught by the "Seven Evils", to take vengeance on the man who killed his father - the Prince of the invading Chin Kingdom. With dazzling costumes, sets, and martial arts to fall back on, the director tests the mettle of future superstars Hui Ying-hung (soon to be My Young Auntie) and Kuo Chue, who was to become the star of the "Venoms" series as well as one of the most respected action choreographers in the world (with both Tomorrow Never Dies and Brotherhood Of The Wolf to his credit).

The swordsman genre well under way, even directors like the es¬tablished Yueh Feng, who had directed romance stories since 1938, gave it a spin. THE BELLS OF DEATH, a whirlwind story about a man who embarks on a life long journey to learn the sword then find and eliminate the three men who killed his family and abducted his sister, features an appearance of relatively new Shaw Brothers' faces hoping to make the grade and become the next Jimmy Wang Yu, David Chiang or Ti Lung. Amidst fountains of blood and guts, actor Wu Ma rang true as his bells of glory eventually tolled. He went on to star in 180 movies (including several with Jackie Chan and Jet Li) and become one of Hong Kong's premiere, new wave, ghost story film directors.

Perennial Shaw Brothers hero Ti Lung versus perennial Shaw Brothers villain Lo Lieh. This combination is always enough to make one buckle up for a rousing ride of stylized fun. Based on a story about the famous anti-Ching Hung Hua Society, Chen Chia-lo (Ti Lung) must endure music attacks, great acts of betrayal and loyalty, memorable twists and controlled confusion to capture Ching Emperor, Chien Lung, who turns out to be his brother. Chang Chao-Chung (Lo Lieh) wants Chien Lung back. Besides ultra-extravagant sets, THE EMPEROR AND HIS BROTHER uses cool special effects to embellish Chen's secret "peacock fist" technique. Of particular note, the final action sequence features Jackie Chan's kung-fu buddies, Yuan Te and Yuan Pin, who were both action directors for Sammo Hung's American TV show MARTIAL LAW.
